| |  | | | | Foundation stone for SmartCity unveiled
Friday, the 16th of November 2007, will be documented as the day Kerala took a giant leap into a smart future. Heralding the state’s entry into the IT landscape of the country, the Chief Minister of Kerala Mr. V. S. Achuthanandan unveiled the foundation stone of the much-awaited SmartCity project in Kochi. “IT based industries from across the globe have approached the State Government to set up similar knowledge based initiatives in various parts of the state” Mr. Achuthanandan said in his inaugural speech. The Government would also the address the infrastructural needs that would arise consequent to such mega projects, he added. Mr. Ahmed Bin Byat in his message to the audience said “The SmartCity Kochi will play a key role in Smart City’s own global plans. The long term objective is to create a global network of self sustained industry townships for the knowledge based industries”. The inaugural function, held at the project site in Kakkanad, Kochi, was also attended by ministers and senior officials of the State Government.
Smart City Kochi is a joint venture between the Government of Kerala and Dubai Technology, Electronic Commerce & Media Free Zone Authority (TECOM). Covering 246 acres of land and an estimated built-up space of 88 lakh sq ft, SmartCity Kochi will be one of India’s largest business parks. The project, when completed, will feature an architecture that is an assorted blend of modern and local traditional styles amidst an exquisitely designed landscape, SmartCity Kochi will create an infrastructure and environment for knowledge-industry companies to grow and flourish. 70% of the built-up space would be devoted exclusively for IT related activities. Kochi will join Malta as the first two members of a global network of knowledge-based industry townships that Smart City seeks to create. The Kochi project would generate 90,000 jobs and is expected to catapult Kerala to become one of the leading IT destinations in the country.
E-governance awards for Kerala
Kerala won recognitions in practices related to e-governance as part of the CSI-Nihilent awards, instituted by the Computer Society of India and Nihilent, an ISO 9001:2000 and SEISM CMMIA level 5 certified global business consulting and solutions integration company. One of the awards bagged by Kerala was for the Best Progressive e-governed state, while the other two were for the Best G2C / G2E e-governance projects viz. Centralized Allotment Process for the Professional Course Admissions (CAPNIC) and DC Suite, implemented by National Informatics Centre at the District Collectorate, Palakkad. The awards were announced during the national annual convention of the Computer Society of India in Bangalore.
UST Global Kochi centre inaugurated
The Chief Minister, Mr. V. S. Achuthanandan inaugurated the UST Global Kochi Centre at Vismaya Building in Info Park on the 22nd of November. After the UST Global Technopark centre, the Kochi facility is the second to come up in Kerala. The new 24,000 sq ft development center at the Kochi Business Centre in InfoPark will offer IT, infrastructure management and business process outsourcing services. It will initially accommodate 250 people and up to 2000 people when fully staffed. “For IT service providers such as UST Global that are in a growth mode, there are a multitude of cities in India in which to choose from. Yet with so many cities plagued by limited bandwidth, we consciously avoid those areas and instead choose cities that will support our, and our clients’, best interests,” said Mr. Sajan Pillai, President and COO, UST Global. “Kochi is one of three cities in India that is a hub for the undersea cable, which gives UST Global better connectivity and less competition for that bandwidth. This location aligns well with our client-centric Global Engagement Model by helping us expand our services in an economically viable way for our clients.”
IBS, Maldives Port Authority ink pact
The Technopark-based IBS Software recently entered into a deal with the Maldives Port Authority (MPA), by which iPort, an operations management solution developed by IBS would take care of port operations from cargo delivery to billing for MPA. The cutting edge management solution – iPort from IBS would optimize the management of core operations at the port, reducing the throughput time of vessels and cargo. It is a fully integrated port operations management system, capable of providing flawless support to a wide range of port operations that include marine operations, cargo and container handling, yard operations, cargo delivery and billing. iPort has been designed for efficient cargo movement and as an effective measure to check revenue leakage. It is currently being used at three ports under Sharjah Ports Authority.
Digitella opens development centre
Digitella, a British software company, has opened a development centre at Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram. Operating from an area of around 5000 sq ft, the new facility of Digitella currently provides workspace for about 75 professionals. The Chief Executive Officer of Digitella, Mr. Jeb Buckler had this to say about the new facility at Technopark. “The shifting of operations to Technopark is an important milestone for Digitella. Our new infrastructure enables us to raise our capabilities and service levels up to world-class standards and provide quality resources.” Digitella’s expertise lies in a wide range of technical domains including ERP solutions like SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, Microsoft .Net, etc. as well as in open source software development. The company’s international clientele include British Telecom, British American Tobacco, Barclays Bank, L’Oreal, ST Microelectronics, British Airways, Rolls Royce and Relay Consultants.
Companies in Technopark and Fukuoka for partnership
A business development meet was recently organized by Technopark in association with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) at the Technopark campus in Thiruvananthapuram. A high profile business delegation comprising representatives of the foreign trade committee of Japan and government officials of Fukuoka City, also known as Silicon Island took part in the meet. The 14-membet team was headed by Mr. Masamitsu Watanabe, Chief Executive of the Economic Promotion Bureau of the Fukuoka City Government, Japan. The meet was also marked by an equally good participation by companies in Technopark and also by academic institutions. The delegation informed that several companies in Fukuoka City were looking forward to partner with Technopark-based companies in embedded software business.
