SmartCity Kochi is a self-sustained industry township for knowledge-based companies located in the city of Kochi, the commercial capital of the south Indian state of Kerala.
To be developed by SmartCity and the Government of Kerala, SmartCity Kochi will be one of India’s largest business parks.
Based on the successful models of Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Dubai Knowledge Village, SmartCity Kochi will provide an infrastructure, environment and support systems to promote the growth of knowledge-based industry companies.
The project has an employment generation potential of over 90,000 jobs. Multiplier effects are expected to bring several other benefits to the state.
The much awaited SmartCity Kochi project got a fresh set of deadlines and impetus today after a meeting of the delegates from Tecom, the promoters of the SmartCity Kochi project, with the Kerala Government in Trivandrum. Tecom would reopen its Kochi office before August 31, 2011 and present the concept master plan by September. The work on the first phase 3.5 lakh sq.ft. building would start by October 31 and this would be rolled out by October 31, 2012.
Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy said, “This is the realisation of a long cherished dream. The SmartCity Kochi project has been finalised and new deadlines have been set. The project would be carried out within the framework of the existing agreement worked out by previous Government. As any change in the agreement at this stage would further delay the project, we opted against it. However a major change is that now the Central Government SEZ norms will be applicable to this project.”
The CM also added that the Government will notify the project as an Industrial Township within a month. An additional four acres of land will be allotted to the existing 246 acres to enable the SmartCity Kochi project to get the Services SEZ status. Meanwhile, the Government has in principle accepted to take up the infrastructure road development works to the project site on a priority basis and resolve some issues pending with KSEB and GAIL.
