Dr. SMS – a m-Health Information System for Kerala

A novel project has been initiated by KSITM on 29th May 2008. The sole idea of the project is to to enable people to use their mobile phones to receive information on health resources and to provide the user with a comprehensive list of medical facilities available in that locality, like hospitals having expertise in various medical specialties (Cardiology etc), Doctors in the locality with expertise in ENT or any other Specialization etc.

The System Now has complete information about the health infrastructure of Kozhikkode, Kannur, Kasaragod, Trissur, Ernakulam, Iduuki(60%) and Alapuzha (90%) Districts. To avail the facility the user has to send an SMS to a predesignated number (9446460600) , the contents of the SMS should be the Pin code of the locality he/she wants to have the information about the medical facilities/doctors.

Eg: HEALTH <PIN CODE> <SPECIALISATION> ( Health 695001 Heart and send SMS to 9495949000)

Other than the SMS channel, for delivering the Health infrastructure information, a web portal catering to the internet users is readied and available at the URL www.drsms.kerala.gov.in

A Geographical Information System based Location Mapping is also available in the portal, one can access the location of the health facility by clicking the 'Location' Option in the portal.

Status of Implementation

A centralized facility for Dr SMS has been established at State Data Center, Trivandrum and a New Number for the State (9495949000) has been established.

The State Wide launch was Inaugurated by Hon'ble Minister For Health and Family Welfare On 20th July 2009 at Kannur Collectorate.
